The Context & Challenge

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute evaluates biosecurity measures across salmon and trout farms in Norway using KoboToolbox. However, raw survey data was hard to read and evaluate. There was no user-friendly way for veterinary epidemiologists to view regional risks, nor for aquaculture producers to see their scores, evaluate individual vulnerabilities, and compare them against national averages.

The Solution

A highly secure, multi-tenant dashboard built with Next.js 16 and Bun. The platform dynamically integrates with the KoboToolbox REST API via Bun-backed Next.js API routes, pulling survey data in real time. Clerk authentication with Role-Based Access Control gates specific views — admins see everything, producers see only their farms, and the public sees anonymized aggregates. Tailwind CSS v4 powers fully responsive mobile and tablet layouts for field workers collecting data directly at the farms. The result is a sovereign, performant analytics platform that turns raw biosecurity surveys into actionable intelligence.

Technical Deep Dive

The platform is organized around three technical pillars that transform raw field data into real-time biosecurity intelligence.

Spatial Epidemiology Map (MapLibre GL)

High-speed interactive rendering of farm locations across Norwegian fjords. Combines geographic coordinate plotting, cluster density groupings using supercluster, and dynamic heatmaps to spot high-risk biological contamination zones at a glance.

Multi-dimensional Analytics (Apache ECharts)

High-fidelity visual intelligence powered by echarts-for-react. Radial radar charts evaluate biosecurity vectors — hygiene protocols, disinfection routines, physical containment — alongside real-time circular risk gauges and dynamic regional benchmarking charts.

Role-Based Multi-tenancy (Clerk & next-intl)

Admins (Institute staff) get a comprehensive country-wide overview of biosecurity status. Producers (Farm Managers) access private farm-specific reports and benchmark against the national average. Public users view anonymized, aggregated high-level data for scientific research and public awareness.

Sovereign & Self-Hosted Infrastructure

Since the system deals with sensitive national biosecurity data, the platform is hosted on a private server using Docker, behind a robust self-hosted reverse proxy (Caddy). This architecture ensures complete data sovereignty, strict privacy compliance, and absolute control over sensitive environmental metrics. No third-party cloud provider has access to raw survey data.

Project Impact

Key outcomes and metrics from the implementation. Every number is drawn from the project scope, the production system, or authoritative industry data.

One dataset, three views

A farm manager in Nordland sees four farms. An epidemiologist in Oslo sees 340 nationwide. Same data, automatic role filtering. No configuration, no overexposure.

Field to map in five minutes

A technician marks ISA virus presence in Alta. Five minutes later, the heat map shows a new red point. Direct KoboToolbox sync — no batches, no imports.

Full data sovereignty

Every survey lives on a private Norwegian server. No cloud provider processes raw farm data. GDPR compliance and data residency by design.

Protecting ~1.6M tonnes

Norway produces ~40% of global farmed salmon (Iversen, 2025). Every visualization protects a supply chain worth billions.

Let's Build Something Intelligent

Have a project in mind? I'd love to hear about it. Whether you need an AI agent, a full-stack platform, or something that doesn't exist yet — let's build it.
